I’ve been thinking about this today. I remember when my younger sister died. She was seven, She just got sick and never got better. The experience of losing her led many of us who loved her to find someone to blame. Maybe the doctor didn’t do enough to save her, or they sent her home once, so they didn’t know what they were doing.
In the years that followed, I came to realize that assigning blame for a tragedy is a natural impulse. It’s an attempt to create a reason for what has happened. I understood after a while that the doctor was not to blame. Sometimes people die, and there’s no sense to it or anyone to blame. Sometimes there’s nobody to point a finger at. People will do it anyway, but it’s unjust to pick somebody and slap the blame on them just to have someone to direct your anger at.
